What Acupuncture Treats
I am often asked “Can acupuncture treat x?”, where x equals any of a variety of diseases, disorders, syndromes or symptoms. I could easily list several dozen (and the World Health Organization has compiled an extensive list available here. I am attempting to let this page be a general response to all of these questions. The short and simple answer to the above question is always a “YES”. However, the short and simple answer is rarely enough, so…there is also a “NO” answer as well. Let me start with the No side of the argument. First, there are many imposed prohibitions or warnings against claiming to be able to treat or cure various diseases such as cancers. Second, there are situations that more intensive interventions might be required. For example, I have had a torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Though I treat it now with acupuncture, I am also very glad that it was surgically repaired.
In acupuncture and Chinese Medicine there is a rich and well documented history of treatment strategies and protocols for any condition that we can face. We treat the person who comes into the treatment room, and not the symptom.
Acupuncture treats a myriad of issues and is also an effective preventative medicine. In 2003, the World Health Organization indicated a list of disease or disorders for which acupuncture has been shown effective (click here for list). Some of these illnesses include:
Generalized Pain
Asthma
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Lower Back Pain
Osteoporosis
Fibromyalgia
Tennis Elbow
Headaches
Menstrual Cramps
Addictions
Anxiety
Depression
Mood Swings
Insomnia
and more....
